Himalayan singing bowls

Updated: 5 days ago

The Soul of My Practice

The first time I felt the effect of a Himalayan singing bowl, I was lying on the floor of a small gallery in Bali. It was during my yoga teacher training, after an intense day of sightseeing, and my back hurt so much I could hardly move. I stumbled into the Spirit of Sound gallery, more out of desperation than curiosity, and was welcomed with such warmth. They asked nothing, simply laid me down, and placed a singing bowl on my back. For twenty minutes, they let the bowl sing.

What happened next was magical.

The pain completely disappeared. As if sound touched something that words couldn’t reach. That moment marked the beginning of my journey into SoundMeditation. I bought my very first bowl there, my ‘mother’ bowl. She now stands at the heart of my studio, filled with water, which I use during sessions to explain what vibration does to a bowl, and to the human body. In my introduction video, you can see her in the center, with eight daisies inside: my lucky number, and a tribute to the eight most special people in my life. To me, she symbolizes purity, innocence, and love.

What does a Himalayan singing bowl do?

Himalayan singing bowls work on multiple levels at once:

  • they send deep, tangible vibrations through the body

  • they calm brain waves

  • they activate the parasympathetic nervous system (rest and recovery)

  • they help you release what’s stuck, without talking or analyzing

Each bowl has its own tone, frequency, and character. Large bowls produce deep, grounding tones. Smaller bowls work more lightly, often on the upper energetic layers. In a SoundMeditation, I use a full range of bowls, tuned to what wants to move. You often feel it instantly: a shift within. Your breathing changes. Your thoughts quiet down. Sometimes, there’s even an emotional release, gentle or powerful, exactly what you need in that moment.

Why I work with them

Because they work. Because they are both soft and powerful. Because you don’t have to do anything, you’re allowed to simply receive. The sound carries, opens, relaxes. It helps you remember what it feels like to be fully present in your own body, without judgment. And every single time, I’m grateful to work with such pure instruments. Every tone is an invitation. Every vibration a bridge back to yourself.

Where do they come from, and how are they made?

All of my Himalayan singing bowls are handmade, each one a unique sound instrument with its own story. They are hand-hammered in Nepal or India, following ancient traditions passed down through generations. You can see and feel the craftsmanship. No two bowls are exactly alike. Every imperfection, every line in the metal, is the result of hours of patient work and loving attention. That’s exactly what gives them their power and character.

Traditionally, the bowls are made from an alloy of seven metals, each symbolizing a planet: gold (sun), silver (moon), mercury (Mercury), copper (Venus), iron (Mars), tin (Jupiter), and lead (Saturn). Each metal contributes its own frequency and energetic quality. The right blend and long hammering process create the rich, resonant tone and deep vibration that Himalayan bowls are so known for.

Originally used for eating

Long ago, these metal bowls were used in the Himalayan regions as eating bowls, simple, everyday objects. But monks and shamans discovered that when you gently rub a wooden mallet around the rim or strike the bowl, it produces a unique sound that deeply affects the body and mind. What once served as a utensil became a sacred tool for meditation, prayer, and healing.

A timeless gift

Himalayan singing bowls come primarily from Nepal, India, and Tibet, where they are connected to Buddhism and shamanic traditions. In monasteries, they were used in rituals or to support deep meditation. Today, they are beloved around the world for their healing power, and interest is growing in science as well. The combination of audible sound and felt vibration proves to have a powerful effect on the nervous system, brain waves, and even the body’s cells.

What you hear, you also feel

What’s so special about these bowls is that you don’t just hear them, you feel them. When a bowl sings on or near your body, the vibrations resonate deep into your tissues, organs, and bones. That felt effect is unique, and it’s exactly what makes my sessions so effective. It’s the language of frequency, a language you don’t need to understand in order to feel.

Every time I choose a new bowl, I don’t just listen with my ears, but with my heart and my hands. Only then do I know whether it belongs in my collection. Each bowl in my studio has been carefully selected, a sound partner on my path, and perhaps soon, on yours.
