Lightness in Sound
Sometimes you hear a tone, and in a single second, you’re transported back to a memory. That’s what the Koshi chimes do to me, every single time. I’m taken back to when my sons were little. They had a tumbler toy that made almost exactly the same gentle sounds as the Koshi chimes.
That sound touches something childlike, something soft, something safe. As if time pauses for a moment. As if your heart remembers what your mind forgot.
What are Koshi chimes?
Koshi chimes are delicate, handcrafted sound instruments from the French Pyrenees. Each chime is carefully tuned to one of the four elements: earth, water, fire, or air.
They hang freely inside a bamboo cylinder and are played by gently moving them, or by letting the wind do its work.
Their sound is crystal clear, sparkling, and light. They’re not loud or dramatic, but they hold a quiet strength: they open something. A space, a feeling, a memory.
What do they do?
their sound is clear, dreamy, almost magical
they bring lightness, freshness, and playfulness
they gently cleanse your energy field
they soothe and regulate the nervous system
they invite surrender, wonder, and calm
For many people, the Koshi chimes are pure delight. Some sigh with relief. Others smile or get goosebumps. They open a door, to who you once were, and maybe forgot.
How I use them
During my SoundMeditation sessions, I often walk slowly around the space with the Koshi chimes. I let them ring around the head or body, like wind gently moving through the leaves of a tree. I tune in to the breath of the group or individual and move with intention, sometimes slow, sometimes playful, so the tones seem to dance through the air.
The Koshi chimes invite stillness. They bring a lightness that lingers, long after the sound has faded. As if they leave behind a soft veil of peace and clarity.
Why I cherish them
Because they remind me what it feels like to be free.
Because they touch something ancient and timeless.
Because their simplicity speaks volumes.
Koshi chimes are not a grand spectacle.
They don’t need volume to move you deeply.
Their sound is soft, but it reaches the heart.
And that’s exactly why it stays with you, in silence.
